Newsletter July 2010 As we enter our sixth month, we are seeing exciting growth and changes. We have welcomed three new residents and their families to Agape Manor. Mary Pat Cahhal is now devoting all her time and talents as Director of Residential Care Services. Renee Knight has been added as Executive Director, and she has brought her mother, Bonnie Morley, out of retirement as the Public Relations Director. Michelle Wagner, L.P.N. is joining Dottie Smith, R.N. on the nursing staff. Krystal Chung rounds out our growing staff as Activities Director.
	With summer’s arrival, our residents are enjoying the landscaping and pond, which features a waterfall and koi fish. Our residents enjoy having refreshments on both the front and back patios.
There is always something going on at Agape. In June we hosted a bridge party for a local ladies’ club. We also threw a luau party complete with leis and Hawaiian fare. There were approximately 50 people in attendance. The fourth of July was celebrated with a barbeque, sparklers, and an Independence Day trivia game. A good old fashioned ice cream social was held on July 15th, with other seniors from the community invited to join our residents and their families. An apartment has been fully furnished to accommodate short term stays or residents who don’t want to bring their own furnishings. Bonnie calls it “The Rose Suite”, because it has a rose motif, and, in her humble opinion, is very lovely. Who wouldn’t want to “just move in”? Norman Lee Sanford and Mary Sue Williams are always in the kitchen cooking up delicious meals and snacks. The teriyaki chicken and cream cheese brownies are some of the residents’ favorites. One of our residents was overheard saying, “I’ve gained five pounds since I moved in. I just love having someone cook for me”. We are always pleased to have family members join our residents for a meal. Our CNAs, Erin, Jen, and Krystal provide all the care and pampering for our residents. They truly are the backbone of Agape—wearing any hat that needs wearing with a smile and a caring touch. Agape Manor welcomes families and community anytime for visits or tours. Johnson County offers a variety of housing options for seniors Published: Wednesday, July 7, 2010 9:47 AM CDT Bulletin staff report Johnson County is home to a variety of housing options for the senior population. From an independent living facility to a nursing home, Johnson County seniors have several choices to consider. According to Agape Manor Marketing Director Bonnie Morley, choosing a facility can be confusing. “It all boils down to matching the needs of the individual,” Morley said. She believes that seniors should understand the basic definition of each type of facility and the needs that each serves. Independent living facilities – such as Kaycee Senior Housing – are also known as congregate housing or senior retirement housing. In Kaycee, these are apartments offered to seniors. Audrey Brown, who manages Kaycee Senior Housing with her husband Rodney, said independent living settings provide seniors with the flexibility to “come and go as they please. “It is an opportunity for seniors to reside with each other and have a sense of community,” Brown said. Independent living facilities are age-restricted and do not typically offer the presence of an attendant. Board and care, another senior housing option, is for individuals who function independently, but appreciate the provision of meals and non-medical supervision, Morley said. An example in Johnson County is Beehive Homes. According to Robin Ruff, manager of Beehive Homes, the residents at a board and care facility have to be able to take care of a majority of their own everyday tasks. She said Beehive is set up to provide a “home-like setting” in which residents have their own rooms, but share a central dining area, kitchen and living room. Brown said board and care facilities usually have an attendant rather than a nurse available 24/7 to assist seniors as needed. Another housing choice is an assisted living community. Assisted living communities are designed to provide assistance with the activities of daily living for seniors who do not need the skilled medical care provided by a nursing home. “Basically they are there because they are having trouble with day to day activities,” Morley said. Assisted living facilities meet the needs of seniors who may have difficulty bathing, taking medications and eating nutritionally. Examples of assisted living facilities in Johnson County are Agape Manor Assisted Living or the Wyoming Veterans Home. Senior housing choices also include a nursing home, known often as a convalescent home or long-term care facility. “A nursing home is more for the chronically ill,” Morley said. These facilities are designed to care for the individual who needs a high level of skilled medical attention. Amie Holt Care Center, attached to the Johnson County Healthcare Center is an example in this. Buffalo Senior Center Assistant Director Sally Frost said many people confuse the senior center with the nursing home. “Most people think we are the nursing home,” she said. The Buffalo Senior Center is separate from the nursing home. The center provides congregate meals and various services, but “no one lives here,” Frost said.
